What is busy?

  • Looking at the list of things to do and wondering where do I start?
  • Getting to the end of the week and sometimes day and feeling like wow that was a busy day but on reflection things don’t seem to be moving.
  • Do you feel you are spending a lot of time on something, but not getting much done?

We live in a busy world, and if we are honest, we can find ourselves being busy but not productive.

What’s the difference? Being busy can feel like you’re frantic, whilst being productive is about focus. Being busy is sometimes trying to be good at everything and being productive is about being great at a few things.

When we think of this in our business, it would be fair to say that no-one has the luxury to park their life and just build a business. We must learn to be productive around our commitments.

1. Work Smart not just hard

If the list to building your business is long, list down the income producing activities and focus on them first and delegate what you can

Efficiency = Doing the tiny steps of a larger task quickly

Effectiveness = Finding the most optimal way to do something, perhaps even removing the need to do the task itself

2. Set your own direction

What is your passion, what is your voice? By understanding where you want to go, you have a clear vision which allows you to work on purpose.

3. You don’t need to say YES to everything

It’s so easy to say yes to everything and then realise you have a busy diary, but your life doesn’t seem to be changing and your business doesn’t seem to be growing. It’s ok to be selective on what you say yes to. Saying no is about protecting your time.

The 7 habits of highly effective people by Stephen Covey is a really useful book. He talks about the Time Management Matrix. When I first read it 12 years ago, it helped me to change the way I thought about time. Habits Highly Effective People Powerful. The takeaway for me was the part on focusing on the end goal; start with the end in mind.

4. Don’t jump on every trend

We see new trends popping up every day and as a parent it amazes me and as a business owner, I think we need to pause and ask ourselves does this trend serve my customers, it is in line with the business vision? Just because most people have an app doesn’t mean your business needs one! Stay focused and keep the noise down for your customers.

5. Busy people don’t see value in the Quadrant ll

Most people would state feel they are too busy for Quadrant ll task, but productive people make time.

They understand that life is about balance and understand the goals in this area are likely to have the most impact on your life. If you don’t create your vision, your goals, your task list ends up consuming you and you don’t achieve your goals. If you read the blog about money flow then you will know this quadrant is important.

6. Putting off task’s that you don’t want to do

There is an easy solution to this, either you delegate this to someone else or learn to do them first so that they don’t use too much of your head space. Eat that Frog by Brain Tracey is a great introduction to time management and being productive. That Frog Great Ways Procrastinating.

Author Brian Tracy calls this “eating your frog,” quoting Mark Twain. Twain famously said that if the first thing you do in the morning is eat a live frog, you can go through the rest of the day knowing the worst is behind you. Your frog is your worst task, and you should do it first thing in the morning.

7. Stay Focused

Stay focused in a world where everything seems to be a click away and the noise and distraction can be overwhelming at times. Set your times when you will go on your phone, check social, emails, personal messages. If you stay present in all your tasks you will complete them more effectively.

Being productive means making the results a priority. Change your own language, instead of saying “I’ll work the next hour on doing something”,  say “I am going to get these things done in the next hour”.

By applying this simple concept, you will see how things change for you.

Have fun being productive and remember that Quadrant ll is part of your life and not an add on.
